custom websites

METHODOLOGY

What do we mean by “custom websites”? If you asked ten different web developers for a definition, you would probably get ten different answers. However, our definition of a custom website is one that's scope and design is established through a collaboration with the client and not by the limitations of the technology we choose to use.

What this means in practice is that we build our website projects by interacting directly with the source code instead of relying too much on tools which abstract this process. While there are many helpful software applications that allow web professionals to build websites quickly, we find that no single tool is able to perfectly meet the needs of our clients unless we end up adding programming code to bridge these gaps.

By and large we build our website projects modularly and manually via HTML, CSS and the programming languages, PHP and Javascript. By doing this, a couple problems are avoided:

  1. Code bloat associated with everything-but-the-kitchen-sink software applications: By only adding the necessary functionality and features our client’s need, our website projects are leaner and, therefore, have less potential for problems down the road.
  2. Building a site with technology that could be abandoned at some point in the future: For example, if a site is built with a page builder application and then the company that built the page builder goes out of business, then it’s only a matter of time before any sites using the page builder start having problems.

WORKFLOW

There are two main workflows we employ on our website projects; we refer to one as Template Customizing and  the other as From Scratch. We’ll consult with you to help you decide which is the better workflow for your project. Below is a brief description of each workflow.

Template Customizing:

  1. Client picks out a template they like
  2. A wireframe is built which provides a basic layout of all the pages
  3. Site is built and customized using feedback from the client

Template Customizing is a good workflow for most websites. It's also quicker and less expensive which makes it a popular option for many small and medium-sized businesses.

From Scratch:

  1. A wireframe is built which provides a basic layout of all the pages
  2. A style guide is created to provide direction in regards to branding colors, patterns, buttons and typography
  3. Photoshop mockups are created for all unique web pages
  4. Site is built from the Photoshop mockups

This workflow gets you exactly what you want and it's great for truly unique designs that can’t be found in an existing theme.
